Jesus’ Thoughts on Conceitedness Is Must Read

Reverend Leo H. McCrary II

Conceit is poisonous to the soul of the conceited and a major threat to all of mankind.

Today’s devotional reading: Luke 18:9-14

Great evil has come from self-righteousness, one thinking themselves better than another. Slavery, oppression, and even war are shown in scripture, having come from self-righteous minds. Modern history shows where slavery, civil wars, and world wars have happened becuase of the self-righteous mind. In this present day, many attrocities occur because one think themselves to be better than another.

Who are we to think ourselves better than another? The mindset of one who is a child of God should be that of Christ, who humbled Himself, and was lowly in this world. In the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, Jesus spoke against being conceited. A religious man who thought himself better than a lowly tax collector because of his religious practice was used as the example of how one of true faith ought not to act.

You make your religion a useless religion when you don’t know the first thing about God’s great desire. The Lord desires love, humility, and unity so that we may elevate each other to salvation. Without such, the religious man isn’t practicing true faith, he simply has mechanical religion. No good fruit can come from mechanical religion.

The believer should keep in the conceit of the Pharisee and conduct themselves in the opposite. Rather than stiring up strife, we ought to stir up harmony, peace, and joy. Only humility can stir up such fruits.
