It Is Good to Fear the Lord – Deut. 5:22-29

Reverend Leo H. McCrary II

Fear the Lord helps to direct us down a righteous path.

Today’s devotional reading: Deuteronomy 5:22-29

When the children of Israel stood at Mount Sinai, the ground shook, there was much much thundering and lightning, and the moutain was covered in a cloud and fire (Ex. 19:16-20). They were standing in the presence of God’s glory and hearing His voice, and the sight caused the people to tremble with much fear. They were so terrified of the Lord that they sent Moses to speak to the Lord on their behalf.

Yet, they were a people who immediately broke their covenant with God during the forty days and nights Moses was on the mountain. They repeatedly sinned especially when they thought they were away from God’s presence. They failed to understand that the Lord was always with them. Had they lived in the fear they had at Mount Sinai, they would have lived in a manner of reverence for the the Lord – they would have lived in obedience.

It is good to fear the Lord; to revere Him and His sovereingty. Yes, the Lord is always watching you, and moreover, the Lord is always with you. The Holy Spirit rests with all of God’s children, and therefore, we ought to be on our best behavior. Yes, you should always put forth your best effort to live in a manner that will please the Lord.

Obedience pleases the Lord. Faithfulness pleases the Lord. Such honor for the Lord is what will lead you to finding great favor and mercy from the Lord; you will be blessed.
