Praying for Mercy and the Renewal of the Soul – Ps. 85:1-9
Reverend Leo H. McCrary II
Praying for mercy helps to lift the weight of sin and add life to the soul

Today’s devotional reading: Psalm 85:1-9
When one prays for mercy, it is truly a great show of one’s faith. The prayer of mercy is not just an acknowledgement that one believes in God, it is a show of one’s humbleness. You see, those who don’t pray, especially don’t pray for mercy and God’s grace, are those who are prideful and arrogant. We should remember that pride and arrogance is what led to Satan’s fall.
None of us is perfect. God will rebuke you and prune you. The humble are able to both acknowledge and accept God’s rebuke and will seek to make corrections. When you pray for the Lord to be merciful and to renew your soul, this pleases God.
In Isaiah 57:15, the Lord tells us that He dwells with those who have a contrite and humble heart. God tells us that He dwells with the contrite and humble heart so that He may revive it.
Sin weighs on the soul, and if one’s heart is not treated of its sin, sin will crush and destroy it. This is why the path of the prideful and arrogant fool is destruction – they never turn to God so that He may revive their soul. Let us never be so prideful and arrogant that we make such a grave decision for our souls. Because we are capable of much sin, let us pray often for the Lord to be merciful and revive our souls.
