Don’t Undo What God Has Done

Reverend Leo H. McCrary II

Who are you to think that your judgment and way of doing things is better than what God has instructed?

Today’s devotional reading: Acts 10:9-35

God gave His only begotten Son to reconcile all things to Himself. Something many of us struggle to understand is the disarray that all of creation was put in due to mankind’s sin.

Adam and Eve’s sin in the garden not only defiled themselves, but it also defiled their children for generation after generation after generation, to this day. Their sin polluted Eden and then it spread outwards, defiling the rest of creation. Animals began to be hunted to sustain man, and plant life began to be consumed both to shelter and sustain man. Sin was, and still is, a plague to God’s creation.

Yet, Christ was given to bring harmony between God and His creation. Something Peter struggled to understand was the concept that what God has cleansed, man must not reduce to being unclean or uncommon. Peter strictly lived by the law of not eating what was considered unclean and he wouldn’t enter into the place of Gentiles. God rebuked his efforts, telling Peter not to reduce His works to being unclean.

To all of us, God’s command is to love everyone, to do what is good and just according to His righteousness. God gave His only begotten Son so that anyone who chooses to live according to His way by faith will not perish but will have everlasting life (John 3:16). The old stereotypes and laws one was once obedient to, like that of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, should be forsaken for the law of God’s grace.

Choosing to live by man’s self-centered and hateful worldly ways, after you have received knowledge of the way that is greater, is to undo the Lord’s efforts to restore and lift His creation. If you choose to walk with the Lord, you must unlearn the worldliness that the world has trained you in and walk by faith.
