Jeremiah 31:31-34 – Sealed by the Promise

God has made a promise that will cover you all the days of your life and forever more.

Today’s devotional reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34

After Israel was conquered by the Assyrians, they were carried away in exile. After Judah was conquered by the Babylonians, they were also carried away in exile. The house of Israel failed to keep the covenant they had made with God at Mount Sinai during the days of Moses. Yet, after all of their sins, God had not given up on them.

The Lord promised to make a new covenant which He would put in their minds and engrave on their hearts. God promised to forgive their iniquity and to remember their sins no more. The house of Israel failed, but God promised to show them grace, mercy, and deliverance. What had the house of Israel done to deserve such love?

The promise that the Lord spoke of came by way of Christ, who was rejected by the Jews. The promise that the Lord spoke of came by way of Christ, who laid down His life for the world. Because the Jews rejected the cornerstone, Jesus stated that the promise of the kingdom is given to a nation bearing the fruits of it (Matt. 21:42-43).

The nation that Jesus spoke of is a nation that is made up of whoever believes in Him. Whoever believes in Christ will not perish, but will have everlasting life (John 3:16). This is a promise that is engraved, written on the hearts of all who believe in Christ. Not only is the promise written on your heart, but it is also sealed through the dwelling of the Holy Spirit. Through faith in Christ, your iniquity (wickedness) is forgiven, and the Lord will remember your sins no more. Isn’t this promise worth living faithfully for?
