Ezekiel 18:28-32 – The Error of Judging God’s Way

Is it wise for man to judge the way of God, suggesting that our way is wiser?

Today’s devotional reading: Ezekiel 18:28-32

Who are we to judge God’s way? None of us are omnipotent, omniscient, or omnipresent, which is to say that none of us are all-powerful, all-knowing, or always present. Yes, we can be present in places, we do know some things, and we have some form of power, but in every phase we are incredibly limited.

Many animals are stronger and faster than we humans. And, while we love to think highly of our intelligence, we are not the wisest because there is one whose wisdom is far beyond ours.

God is the Creator and is Sovereign over all of creation. When Job complained about God, he did so out of ignorance. Job believed that the Lord had set Himself against him and struck him with toxic arrows and he even cursed the day he was born (Job 3:1-3; 6:1-4). As he continued to complain, the Lord came to Job in a whirlwind with a rebuke that left Job realizing how foolish he was to judge God’s way (Job 38-40:5).

The wisest thing one can do is fear God’s judgment and move to stay in God’s good graces. The Lord does not desire to condemn, but He will condemn those who raise themselves to judge His ways. Lay aside your pride and arrogance. Even lay aside your ignorance so that you may learn to fear the one who says, “Behold, all souls are mine (Ezek. 18:4).”
