John 14:15-27 – The Holy Spirit Is Needed

Reverend Leo H. McCrary II

Do you think that you can take on this faith journey without the Holy Spirit?

Today’s devotional reading: John 14:15-27

Jesus made it clear that those who follow Him live in need of the Holy Spirit. Have you ever considered why the Holy Spirit is needed in our day-to-day?

Why the Holy Spirit is needed:

1. For clarity and understanding. In John 14:26; 16:12-13, Jesus explained that He had much to teach the apostles, but at that time, they were incapable of understanding His teachings. Yet, He promised that they would receive the Spirit of Truth, who would help them to understand the deeper teachings of Christ. We need the Holy Spirit on a day-to-day basis so that we can gain further knowledge and understanding on this journey of faith. There will never be a time when we will know everything about this faith journey, as knowledge and wisdom is something that should constantly be growing.
2. For direction. Again, in John 14:16-18; 16:13, Jesus made it clear to the apostles that the Holy Spirit would abide with them in order to help direct them on the faith journey. Believers cannot take the faith journey alone, as the path to the kingdom is a narrow one that is filled with obstacles. The Holy Spirit will help to guide us down the narrow path so that we may reach the heavenly kingdom.
3. For peace. In John 14:27, Jesus told the apostles that He was leaving His peace with them through the Holy Spirit so that their hearts would not be troubled. As we journey down the narrow path to the kingdom, we not only endure obstacles trying to block our path, but there are also hindrances that we cannot see; yet they trouble our spirit. As Paul said, we constantly do battle against principalities, powers, rulers of the dark, and spiritual hosts of wickedness. The Holy Spirit is needed to help bring peace to a heart that is troubled by all that we can and cannot see on this journey.

Let us not think for one second that we can endure this journey without the help of the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, we would all be lost! No, the Holy Spirit is certainly needed today, so let us open up our hearts and receive Him.
