The Blessing of Being Prudent in Speech

Reverend Leo H. McCrary II

What good can come from who does not know how to control their speech?

Today’s devotional reading: Proverbs 17:27-28

Think before you speak. Think before you act. The Book of Proverbs does not mince words nor does it hide the results of those who act and speak without thought. Solomon called such a one a fool. One who speaks and moves without thought stirs up strife, which leads to transgression and destruction (Prov. 14:12; 15:18; 29:22).

Stiring up strife, leading one to disobedience and destruction, ought not be the way of God’s children. Proverbs teaches that the wise are prudent in their way (Prov. 14:15). God’s children must consider their steps, rather than moving without thought, especially if we set out to fulfill God’s calling. We are called to move as peacemakers, not instigators and troublemakers.

While we are going to have moments where we want to say something, we should take a moment to pause and breathe in those moments. While it is normal to get upset, we have to take in consideration how anger can lead to wrath. Wrath is unhealthy for the soul. Paul wrote, “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil (Eph. 4:26-27).”

So, let us learn self-control. When we can control our emotions, we can learn to better control our tongue and our actions. Such control will help to make for peace and healthy fellowship.
