The House of God Is Closer Than You Think
Reverend Leo H. McCrary II
What is the house of God? We ought not think for a second that God dwells in a building with a steeple on the top of it.

Today’s devotional reading: 1 Kgs 8:12-19, 27
God is not bound to a building. One of the greatest misunderstandings that one can have about the Lord is that He can be chained and bound. The children of Israel struggled to understand that God was not just in the tabernacle or in the Ark of the Covenant. When Solomon built the first temple, they struggled to understand that God was not just in the temple. They would get away from these locations and act sinfully, as if God couldn’t see them.
God is sovereign. In Isaiah 66:1, the Lord said to man, “Heaven is my throne, and Earth is my footstool.” God then asked, “Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest?” You see, God sits high and He looks low. We ought not ever think that God is only in a church building.
Don’t overlook that the Spirit of God rests with you. If you are of sincere faith, the Holy Spirit abides with you. As Paul pointed out, the sincere believer is a temple of God. God is always with you wherever you go. The Lord rests with you wherever you go. In a manner of speaking, everywhere you step is holy ground because you are the dwelling place of God.
This is a thought that should change the way we walk and speak – how we act. This is a thought that should change how we move to where we should move in grace and with confidence. Because we are a temple of God, we ought to move with honor everywhere we step.
