Prov. 1:1-7 – At Your Wisest, Be Humble

Who are we to ever think that we don’t need God’s wisdom or help?

Today’s devotional reading: Proverbs 1:1-7

You may be wise, but at your wisest, there are still questions that you do not have answers to. I am reminded of what Paul asked the Corinthians when he asked, “Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world (1 Cor. 1:20)?” He then stated that the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and that God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise (1 Cor. 1:25, 27).

So, at your wisest, you will be confounded by something, especially in your walk of faith. We cannot know everything there is to know about this journey, even when many of us have been on this pilgrimage for a long time. Trials, tribulations, afflictions, and infirmities are enough to trouble the best of us on this journey. Going down the narrow path, with all of its hindrances and obstacles, can be difficult for the most faithful servants of the Lord.

How you respond when you are spiritually lost and confused, or troubled in your spirit, will be a testament to where you are in your faith. When the faithful are lost and confused, they should turn to the Lord. When the faithful are troubled in their spirit, they ought to turn to the Lord. The faithful should be humble in their way, acknowledging the need for greater help.

When one refuses to turn to the Lord when they are in need of assistance, the implication is that one knows better than the Lord. To think that you know better than God is incredibly prideful and self-righteous. We all live in need of God’s help on a daily basis! Let us not be overcome with self-righteous pride, but rather, at our wisest, let us remain humble. The one who remains humble and seeks the Lord will be brought out from all of their troubles, and will also gain much understanding.
