Don’t Harden Your Heart | 1 John 3:16-17

Read This Passage: 1 John 3:16-23

16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

1 John 3:16-17 NKJV

Does the love of God abide in your heart? We should govern our lives by the love of God; it should have rule over us. The Lord often encourages us to go the extra mile when one comes to us in need. We are encouraged repeatedly through scripture to treat others the way we desire to be treated. The golden rule, as we call it, essentially tells us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

Sadly, where we are told to learn to turn the other cheek when one smacks, we don’t turn that cheek; we return their fist with our fist. Sadly, we can see someone struggling mightily and in need of a helping hand and we won’t extend a finger, nonetheless our whole hand. When we see someone in need, and we have the ability to help, we should not harden our hearts towards them. The heart of the believer should be gentle and lowly; our hearts should always be open to helping those who may be unable to help themselves.

You see, the Lord is always open to caring for us! Many of us don’t realize this because many don’t believe they need His care, but we are always in need of the Lord’s care. Imagine where you would be if the Lord closed off His heart – His love – to you. We would be in terrible shape, wouldn’t we? Today I encourage you, stop leaving your brothers and your sisters in terrible shape! Open up that heart – that love – of yours!
