God’s Mercy is Right There – Take It! | Jon. 2:7-9
October 23, 2024
7 “When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple. 8 “Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own Mercy. 9 But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.”
Jonah 2:7-9 NKJV
I was preparing my commentaries of the Sunday School lessons for the upcoming month when I came across this scripture. I highlighted this scripture in my app over 6 years ago and the application of it today still rings as loud as I imagine it did back then.
I want to share these verses because many of us are choosing to regard “worthless idols” more than we regard the Lord. David said that God was his light and salvation (Ps. 27:1). David said that God was his strength and his shield (Ps. 27:7-8). David also said that God was the God of his mercy (Ps. 59:10). When you know of David’s great sin, you will understand that him saying God was these things to him meant everything.
Jonah, likewise if you know his great sin, him saying that he would make sacrifice to the Lord. Him saying that he would not be like those who regard worthless idols and forsake their own Mercy meant everything. Jonah understood that God was his mercy. You see, after both of their great sins, it would have been easy for both of these men to beat themselves up. Yet, their own mercy – their relief from the burden of sin – was in the Lord.
Many of us beat ourselves up because we rather turn to idols than to our own Mercy. God is our mercy (our relief) from the wrong we have done. Guilt, should you let it, will absolutely paralyze and destroy you. Yet, it doesn’t have to be that way, does it? God doesn’t want guilt to destroy you. God desires to give you relief from all of your wrong so why not take the relief He offers? God has made Himself available to you and all you have to do is go and take His offer of relief.
