The Greatest Spiritual Gift to Desire from God

Reverend Leo H. McCrary II

We should all desire gifts from the Lord, but there is one gift all of us should wish

Today’s devotional reading: 1 Corinthians 14:1-5

Do you know how beautiful it is to be able to help show others the way? Do you know that all of God’s children can, and should, minister His word? Jesus commissioned all sincere believers to baptize all nations into the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe His word (Matt. 28:19-20).

Many of us think ministering means preaching, but that’s not the case. By definition, a minister is an official, in the spiritual sense, it is a clergyman (ordained preacher). However, the act of ministering is the act of tending to, providing care, or helping to support. Every child of God has been called to help uplift – support those around them.

In this portion of Paul’s letter, he focused on gifts. The Corinthian people had the desire for gifts like speaking in tongues, which Paul pointed out would only benefit them if nobody could translate. There is nothing wrong with desiring a gift from God as every child ought to desire a special. However, the greatest gift we should desire is to be able to prophecy.

Prophecy, as in, being able to help guide others in the way of God. Let’s note that prophecy doesn’t simply mean by showing a scripture. There are others ways to guide others to the Lord, especially through your actions. When we guide others to the Lord, that is the most beautiful gift we can share.
