“How can you say, ‘We are wise, And the law of the Lord is with us’? Look, the false pen of the scribe certainly works falsehood. The wise men are ashamed, They are dismayed and taken. Behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord; So what wisdom do they have?

Jeremiah 8:8-9 NKJV

Here are one of those questions that you will find in scripture where the Lord poses a question to man that would stop and stump us in our tracks today. Many of us like to put God in our rear view mirror and go through life believing that we don’t need God for anything. Some of us are so wise that we not only believe that we don’t need God for anything but we will go out and tell others that they don’t need God as well. This is often done with the thought that others are being helped to go beyond religion and expand their minds.

The people that express this way of thinking are doing nothing new under the sun before. In these two verses from Jeremiah 8, the Lord was speaking through the prophet to those that were saying they were wise. The Lord questioned their wisdom because those that were proclaiming they were wise but they were living in rejection of the law. So, because the the law, which was giving by God, is the holy, righteous, and wise instruction of God, the Lord was curious as to what was making them wise since they weren’t living by His law.

What is it that makes us wise today? I’m honestly not certain. Yes, we have our advancement in technology and science. Yet, we are still a society that is easily led astray to do wickedly as we fail to prosper as a society and uplift all people. Some will say that God isn’t making anything better, but the onus actually falls on us to love one another and uplift each other in the love God has shown us. Until we can find away to truly uplift each other, which is what the word of God desires from us, how can we, mankind, every truly boast about our wisdom?
