Num. 15:30-31 – Presume Nothing, Walk by Faith

Presumption will get you into trouble, but faith will never lead you astray.

Today’s devotional reading: Numbers 15:30-31

One of our greatest struggles is that of presumption – being presumptuous rather than being faithful. Being faithful means that one moves in obedience and trust in the Lord’s direction, whereas presumption is filled with guessing what will or will not. Let’s be clear about this: God has never instructed the believer to guess the direction that He will move in, nor has He instructed His believers to guess about what may or may not.

Paul said it best to the Corinthians: we are to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7). Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. In other words, God has moved for you before, and what you witnessed and perceived God doing for you before, He will do for you again! Or, at least, we faithful believers ought to be confident in God’s love to keep us and to tend to our every need.

Sadly, many of us love to grumble and complain that God isn’t moving fast enough with our blessing – this comes from a lack of trust. We will race ahead of God, either trying to force Him to bless us on our schedule or trying to produce our own blessing, but there’s a problem with this: We can’t bless our own soul, nor can we make God do anything. When we move in such a manner, we can only make a mess of things.

As James said, we do not know what will happen tomorrow, so let us trust in the will of God (Jas. 4:13-15). It is God’s will for none of us to be weighed down and destroyed, so why do we worry? Let us no longer guess what actions to take when it comes to “this or that” because that often leads to more panic and worry. Let us be confident in the Lord, knowing for certain that regardless of what this journey throws at us, God’s got us.
