Food For Thought

57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” 61 And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:57,61-62 NKJV

This is a passage of scripture that, in a way, reminds me of Moses. You see, God called on Moses to go stand before Pharaoh and what was the first thing Moses did? He made an excuse, and then another excuse as to why he wasn’t the man for the job. Esther also tried to do the same thing when it came to her calling when Mordecai made a great point. Mordecai told Esther that if she chose not to move, then then God would simply use someone else to be a blessing (Esth. 4:13-14).

“No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God,” is what Jesus said. You see, it’s hard to push forward if they constantly look backwards. These men said they wanted to follow Jesus but didn’t truly want to follow Him as they continued to make excuse after excuse. Following Jesus, as we know, would have been incredibly rewarding for those men.

Today, many of us are making the same choices as these men. Now, Moses and Esther eventually moved and their faith was greatly rewarded. Yet, many of us make excuses as to why we choose not to follow the Lord or do as He has instructed us to do. Like these men, we have things that we want to do and those things take the top priority. We give the Lord so little of our time today, but we can find the time to give to things that, in the end, don’t prosper us (help us to grow as a person).

At some point, we must be honest with ourselves, and determine what our reward truly is. My treasure is in the blessings of God and not this world. If you find that the same holds true for you, may I encourage to stop looking backwards in regret or laterally in envy? May I encourage you to look ahead and move forward to the reward(s) that is of God?
