Food For Thought

13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

Matthew 5:13 NKJV

Jesus told His disciples, “You are the salt of the earth,” which is a statement of great meaning and even purpose.  You see, salt has many uses.  Salt we most commonly think about as seasoning for what we eat.  However, salt is also used as a preservative.  Sodium, in small amounts, helps to regulate (govern) our body.  Of course, too much salt is unhealthy which is why we must be wise in how we use and consume it.

Jesus likens believers to being seasoning, a preservative, and regulators.  What does this mean exactly?  Well, for one thing, we are needed in this world— we have a purpose.  What is our purpose?  Well, we have received the gospel of Christ.  Christ’s gospel is a gospel of love – helping, supporting, and uplifting.  Christ’s gospel is a gospel of correction – a teaching of one living in a manner that will please the Lord.

So, as a child of God, we have the ability to add seasoning to the world through correction.  As a child of God we are able to preserve the souls of those around through the gospel.  Lastly, as a child of God, we have a responsibility to regulate what is the truth.  So, this world needs you now more than ever.

Let us not lose hope in this world in its ups and downs.  Let us keep on keeping on and continue to be faithful to the one who is faithful to us and is in control.
