Who Jesus Came to Call | Mark 2:17

Read This Passage: Mark 2:13-17

17 When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Mark 2:17 NKJV

The religious leaders had a great struggle with trying to understand Jesus. The reason for their great struggle is because they did not truly understand the will of God. What is the will of God? The will of God is that all people be saved, regardless of who they are – race, nationality, class, etc. So, every opportunity He had to minister, Jesus would minister to those who most needed it – the sinner. I want you to understand that Jesus would sit with, eat with, and minister to sinners regularly.

The religious leaders would see Jesus sitting with and eating with sinners and frown in disgust; they would complain and ask questions about what a holy man was doing hanging out with sinners. In our scripture for today, Jesus made it clear that He came to call the sinners to repentance. Guess what. Nobody in the room that Jesus was speaking to was righteous; all of them were sinners and that included the religious leaders as well. There are many that believe themselves to be righteous today, but the truth of the matter is that all of us have sinned and we fall short of the glory of the Lord (Rom. 3:23).

You think you’re perfect because you are a born again believer? Let me tell you something, we have not attained our righteous form just yet! We still sin, and therefore, the Lord calls on us to live in repentance – correction from our sin – every day of our life. Nobody is without sin. Let us not be like the religious leaders who ignored Jesus’ call.
